Tom Clements Has Been a Godsend for the Packers

Look at the north end zone of Lambeau Field and walk around the surrounding streets, and you will see Hall of Fame players and Super Bowl-winning head coaches rightfully honored. But through the years, there have been many coaches and players who have been instrumental to the success of the Green Bay Packers, with far less attention and fanfare paid to them. One of those coaches, in particular, is current quarterbacks coach Tom Clements. You cannot tell the success story of Packer quarterbacks since the turn of the century without Clements.

The Packers’ Cornerback Conundrum

The Packers are counting on two guys coming off injury to man the top two cornerback spots and there's precious little depth after that, writes Jonathan Krim.

While something always has to give, having solid corners is a necessity no matter what scheme you play on defense. Offenses and their QBs have means of getting good receivers open and getting them the ball, even if the number of opportunities for those kinds of plays is minimized somewhat. Just look at how badly Detroit, Minnesota and Philadelphia suffered from poor CB play last year, and how they went hard in the off-season to address the problem. Perhaps Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst is hoping for someone he likes to come available when roster cuts begin. And Jeff Hafley’s reputation as a DB whisperer is encouraging. Or maybe the soft-tissue guru Green Bay hired can help resurrect Stokes’ career. Something needs to happen.

Tyler Davis Has Re-Entered the Chat

On the first day of free agency, the Packers released information that Tyler Davis had been re-signed. It was a move that just made sense for the Packers as Davis provided a solid special teams presence and was a good blocker on offense when needed. But does being 27 years old bode well for Davis on a team making a significant push toward youth?

Jaire Alexander DOES Want to be Here

Prior to last year’s one game suspension, Jaire Alexander had allowed 24 receptions on 31 targets for roughly 13 yards per catch. He also had five passes defended. After the suspension, he went 4/8 on passes sent in his direction, only giving up 6.8 yards average with an interception and another pass defended. Granted the latter is a smaller sample size, but it was still notable that Alexander had a bit of renewed energy.

Now, he’s started the offseason by showing up early and attending all the offseason work that the had skipped the last two years. There certainly seems to be a different energy around the star cornerback.

4th Quarter Will Determine Love's Growth

During his first year as a starter, Jordan Love was superb in the clutch at times, and disappointing at others. This, of course, is what one would expect of a first year starter. And to be sure, the quarterback isn’t solely responsible for a team’s fate at the end of a game. There are blocking failures, dropped passes, penalties, and defensive letdowns to factor in.

It is encouraging to note that Love got much better at these situations as the season progressed, until that final game. Now he heads into 2024 with those experiences under his belt and he should only get better. The Packers will go only as far as their quarterback can take them, and they should feel optimistic about having Love in the driver’s seat when the game is on the line.
