Browns serve Packers humble pie

Packers Hand Game To Browns, 13-10

The Green Bay Packers’ offense and special teams committed critical errors Sunday in Cleveland to earn the team’s first loss of the season. A fourth-quarter interception and blocked field goal handed the Browns the 13-10 victory. Cleveland scored all 13 of its points in the final 5:48.

“Obviously to be in position to win the game at the end and have the script totally flip on you is tough to deal with,” coach Matt LaFleur said after the game.

Green Bay looked ready to escape with a win when Brandon McManus trotted out for a 43-yard field goal attempt and 27 seconds remaining. However, a low kick and push up the middle allowed Shelby Harris to block the try. Browns kicker Andre Szmyt drilled a 55-yard field goal five plays later as time expired.

Cleveland just tied the game 10-10 on its previous drive thanks to a Jordan Love interception by safety Grant Delpit. Facing a short third down with 3:18 remaining on his own 25, Love fired a low pass to his left and over the middle. Delpit, initially lined up in man coverage over Tucker Kraft as the third pass catcher inside, read the triple slants play and jumped over to the second receiver Dontayvion Wicks. LaFleur took blame for the pick.

“We shouldn’t have called that play – that’s on me,” he said. “When they’re playing ‘Man Free,’ a lot of teams will pass off an inside-breaking route and fall into that next window. We knew we couldn't make a deadly mistake like that offensively to give them a short field, and that’s exactly what happened.”

Gut Reactions: Browns humble the Packers

CHTV co-founder Aaron Nagler chats with Packers fans worldwide after the team lays an egg on the road in Cleveland.

Browns 13 Packers 10 Game Balls & Lame Calls

In what feels like an annual tradition, the Packers fail to close the game out against a lesser opponent, and take an early season L that exposes the team's flaws in embarrassing fashion. Last year, the Packers were treated to a humiliating loss at the hands of the Minnesota Vikings, to the tune of a 3 interception game in Jordan Love's return from injury. In 2023, a debacle of a Monday Night Football game against the Las Vegas Raiders was a summation of Love's growing pains. 2022 was the Sauce Gardner Cheesehead game, a 27-10 fart that spelled doom for an anemic offense.

The list goes on and on.

2025's version might be the worst of them all. The Packers rolled into the Dawg Pound riding high off a dream start to the season, featuring everything from a WAY too early mention of an undefeated season, to a couple of #1 spots on power rankings around the web. The team was favored by 7.5 points on the road, and looked ready to take advantage of a Browns offense that had been anemic to begin the season. And well... you already know the rest.

Is this the worst regular season loss of Matt LaFleur's tenure? Perhaps that title belongs to the season opener in 2021, when they were banished to the shadow realm 38-3 by Jameis Winston. Either way, there's little to be gained from this game but a healthy slice of humble pie. I'm not here to cry Chicken Little. The sky is not falling, the 2025 season is not over, and the Packers are still Superbowl contenders. But our job here today is to hand out some superlatives for this game and this game only. And the story of this game is... not great.

Packers Snap Counts Vs. The Browns: Week 3, 2025

After placing Jayden Reed on injured reserve, the Packers have only 51 players on their active roster. The Packers chose to leave those roster spots empty and to not elevate any players from the practice squad. The Packers apparently feel that their 48-man active gameday roster would remain unchanged even if they signed a player or two to the 53-man roster or if they elevated a player from the PS. The inactives were all healthy scratches: OL Donovan Jennings, DL Warren Brinson, and CB Kamel Hadden.

The Lass Word: Doubts Creep In

The Green Bay Packers are not the team on the road they are at Lambeau Field.  The poise, confidence and execution they displayed in home wins against the Lions and Commanders were nowhere to be found in Sunday’s loss to the Cleveland Browns.  The complete collapse of all three phases in the final minutes of the game was stunning.

At the very least, this game ends any thought that this year’s Packers are some sort of juggernaut that is going to tear through their schedule.  Too many weaknesses were exposed.  An offensive line that lacks strength and depth.  A defensive secondary that can’t cover without holding.  And a quarterback who simply can’t handle pressure.

By the fourth quarter, Jordan Love was so rattled by the stout Browns defensive front, he couldn’t even throw checkdowns, sailing them over the heads of receivers who weren’t further than five yards away from him.  Ten days ago Love was calmly throwing the ball away and keeping his team out of trouble.  Against Cleveland, Love looked panicked and indecisive.  Make excuses for him if you like, but there has to be serious doubt he is the quarterback who can lead this team to a deep playoff run.  Granted, he was playing behind an offensive line that was painful to watch, as they got literally run over all day.  But Love is being paid like an elite quarterback.  This was the kind of game he needs to take over and win.

At least the loss was to an AFC team, which won’t hurt the Packers in NFC tiebreakers.  But after that turkey of a performance, maybe any kind of playoff talk is unwarranted….
