Jordan Love returns to practice

Finding a way of working

The Green Bay Packers corralled the Colts in OK fashion last Sunday afternoon. A couple of mistakes turned what should have been a comfortable 16 point win into a tight six point victory, but that's OK. A win is a win and it's to be especially appreciated anytime you win a game with a backup quarterback, never mind one that's only been on your team for 3 weeks. The Packers had a close to perfect game plan on offense to help Malik Willis feel comfortable and not put him in a position where he would have to lead the team to a win.

With Jordan Love returning to practice on Wednesday, there’s a chance the team gets their starting quarterback back on the field this Sunday when the Packers take on the Tennessee Titans. Chances are, however, that Willis will get the start against his former team and it’s good to know Matt LaFleur has found something to build off of with Love’s backup.

Young Offensive Line Key to 2024 Success

In his first start as a Green Bay Packer for Malik Willis, the third-year quarterback relied on a rushing attack that evoked memories of the past on Sunday at Lambeau Field. The Packers ran the ball 53 times for 261 yards, which was the most rushing attempts for the franchise since 1978.

Going into the Week 3 contest with the Tennessee Titans the Packers are leading the league in rushing with 464 yards. The credit for the impressive rushing performance can go to head coach and play-caller Matt LaFleur as well as starting tailback Josh Jacobs, who is currently 4th in the league in rushing. The 151 yards rushing on Sunday was Jacobs’ 3rd highest rushing total of his six-year career. The 32 carries was the second most he had, behind a 33-carry, 229-yard day he had against Seattle in 2022.

To both become and maintain being one of the league’s best rushing teams, much of the credit must go to the five (and sometimes six) guys playing up front. Through two games the group of Rasheed Walker, Elgton Jenkins, Josh Myers, Sean Rhyan, Jordan Morgan and Zach Tom have only allowed two sacks (both coming against Philadelphia), as well as opened up lanes for the likes of Jacobs, Emanuel Wilson, Marshawn Lloyd, Jayden Reed, and Bo Melton.

5 Takeaways From Colts 10-16 Packers: Matt LaFleur Is Awesome

With backup quarterback Malik Willis having been acquired less than three weeks ago, the onus was on Matt LaFleur to craft a functional offense this week, and the effectiveness of said offense was always going to say more about the head coach than the QB. Well, LaFleur created and called a great game plan on Sunday.

Despite everyone in the stadium knowing the Packers wanted to run the ball, they were able to get whatever they wanted on the ground in the first half, racking up 164 rushing yards in the first quarter (!). Green Bay also won the time of possession battle by 20 minutes, and this helped them to build a lead they would never relinquish, even as Indy slowed them down somewhat in the second half. Part of what made the Packers so successful on the ground was the creative play calling of LaFleur, who kept the Colts defense off balance with motion, fakes and sweeps. It was a rushing performance so dominant, it makes you wonder why they do not do it all the time, but the Colts porous run defense played a part as well.

This is not the first time LaFleur has overcome the odds to steer his team to a win. Back in 2021, the Packers went to Arizona to face the undefeated Cardinals, while missing their top three receivers, Davante Adams, Allen Lazard and Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and still managed to put up 24 points en route to a 24-21 victory. LaFleur is a terrific coach and a top tier play caller, and Sunday provided yet more evidence of his brilliance.

Packers Periscope: Sunday's Big Win, 55-7 and Taking Over Broadway

In this week's Periscope, Tony closes the book on Malik Willis's impressive backup effort on Sunday, reflects on a Christmas Keister Kicking in 2012 and peeks ahead to a Green & Gold invasion this coming weekend in Nashville.

Sunday, noon Lombardi Time, Nissan Stadium in Nashville. This is THE destination game for road-traveling Packers fans with a street full of bars, music and partying all within walking distance of the stadium. I'd fully expect this to be a near home game for Green Bay. So much so, I wouldn't be shocked if there's one team operating on a silent count and it ain't the Pack. So much of this hinges on Love's availability, just like last week. But at least now, if he can't go, Willis has a win under his belt and more confidence in addition to another week of prep. But it sure seems like Love is on the mend, so maybe he'll make his return. And even if he does, the Titans are more than formidable defensively, with the likes of Jeffrey Simmons, T'Vondre Sweat and Harold Landry across the front.

While they're struggling, it's mostly their offense. Defensively, they're a strong unit. I do think, though, the Packers win this game whether Love plays or not. We saw that they're capable of running the ball whenever they want, at will. That'll either relieve some pressure off Willis or open things up for Love if he plays. Getting to 2-1 with a division game on the horizon is pivotal for this team, and a goal I think they can achieve.
