Compelling Storylines For The Upcoming Season

The 2024 Green Bay Packers season features intriguing matchups, including the NFL's first-ever game in South America, a rematch of the 2023 Divisional Round, and the first Packers vs Bears of the Caleb Williams era in Chicago.

The Packers' schedule is filled with intriguing storylines, each adding a layer of competition among players and coaches, from facing familiar foes in the division to challenging matchups against powerhouse teams. Matt LaFleur and his team will aim to maintain last year’s momentum throughout the season, making victory a consistent theme for the 2024 Green Bay Packers.

Is Criticism of Josh Myers Valid?

It’s hard not to notice that a lot of Green Bay Packer fans are on the bandwagon to get rid of Josh Myers. A popular narrative has developed that Myers is the weak link on the team’s offensive line. There seems to be a clamor for the former Ohio State star to be replaced by moving either Zach Tom or Elgton Jenkins to center.

As Myers enters the final year of his rookie contract, many supporters of the green and gold seem to feel it is a foregone conclusion that Myers will be allowed to walk next year to provide room for Tom or Jenkins or rookie Jacob Monk to step in. What makes this intriguing is that the signals coming from the Green Bay coaching staff seem to be completely different.

How Will The Packers' RB Trio Fare in 2024?

When Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst drafted power running back A.J. Dillon in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, it was expected by many that Dillon and Aaron Jones, now with the Minnesota Vikings, would form a lightning-and-thunder duo in the backfield, keeping defenses on their toes for years to come. While Dillon certainly had flashes during his first four seasons in the NFL, the lightning-and-thunder duo never fully came to fruition, relative to expectations.

This offseason, Gutekunst took another stab to pair a power back and a change-of-pace back together by signing running back Josh Jacobs in free agency and drafting MarShawn Lloyd in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, while also retaining Dillon on a one-year deal. It’s fair to wonder how the trio will fare this season and beyond.

There's No Stopping This Packers Offense

The expectations for the Packers offense should be sky high. They have a quarterback that is truly invested in the development of his wide receivers, tight ends and running backs. They have an offensive line that is versatile and can deal with just about any situation. Most importantly, this team has a head coach that is willing to mold and evolve with the personnel that he has. One of the biggest flaws of former coach Mike McCarthy was that he tried to run his system no matter what personnel was.

The Packers can put up points in so many different ways. Jordan Love can sit in the pocket and mince a secondary to pieces. Seven pass catchers caught at least 30 passes last year, with Romeo Doubs (69) and Jayden Reed (68) catching at least 60. Love can also move the chains with his feet. Love had eight runs for 10 yards or more last year. He also had 17 runs that accounted for first downs. And speaking of the running game, Josh Jacobs has accounted for 73 runs of 10 yards or more in the last three years. He’s a legitimate home run threat that is coupled with the power of a battering ram by amassing 1,703 yards after contact in the last two years.

The sky's the limit for this offense, and the scary thing is, everyone in the NFC already knows it.

Kingsley Enagbare Gives the Packers Critical Depth at Defensive End

The Green Bay Packers got a pleasant surprise at OTAs when edge rusher Kingsley Enagbare was a full participant. That is critical because the former South Carolina star provides the Packers with crucial depth at one of the most vital positions on the defense.

Enagbare suffered what was believed to be a serious knee injury in the team’s playoff win over the Dallas Cowboys. The injury was believed to be a torn ACL. But when the Packers returned to their practice facility for OTAs this spring, Enagbare wasn’t working with the rehab group. He was participating in all practices and drills. Apparently, the injury was not a full tear and did not require surgery.

Packers Pull Off Cap Magic

Make no mistake, the Green Bay Packers, according to the figures, should be in salary cap hell. In 2023 the team was forced to carry a whopping $57 million in dead cap money. $40 million of that amount came from the trading of Aaron Rodgers. Fully twenty-five percent of Green Bay’s entire cap allotment was dead money. This year is almost just as bad. The Packers are currently saddled with just under $50 million in dead money. That's still roughly twenty percent of their total space. Most of it comes from the departure of players such as Aaron Jones, De’Vondre Campbell, David Bakhtiari, and Darnell Savage, plus the trade of Rasul Douglas. Only seven other teams in the NFL have a larger figure.

But, incredibly, Green Bay is listed as having $28.4 million in cap space. That’s eighth highest in the league. Far from rebuilding, the Packers finished 2023 with a winning record, made the playoffs, and won a playoff game.
