Organized Team Activities are here!

Packers kick off Organized Team Activities

Yes, it's that most glorious of times known as OTAs!. These are still the voluntary practices, but attendance is almost perfect, which tells you something about the passion in these young guys and their belief in what's attainable this season. As is usually the case, the first OTAs are also a time when you find out things that have been brewing behind the scenes.

First off, the injury bug seems to have already bitten the Packers. Zach Tom and Tucker Kraft both suffered pectoral injuries over the offseason, joining head coach Matt LaFleur as members of that dubious club. LaFleur hurt himself lifting weights and while it hasn't been reported, one would likely assume Tom and Kraft likely suffered the same fate. Tom and Kraft are expected to be out "at least" until the beginning fo training camp. Kraft's arm was in a sling and his injury is considered more serious than Tom's.

Josh Jacobs has the dreaded H-word - a hamstring injury. He did at least participate in warmups though, and is expected to be fully recovered soon.

We did get some positive injury news as Kingsley Enagbare, widely thought to have suffered an ACL injury in the Dallas playoff game, was participating as a "full go" in OTAs. It turns out Enagbare didn't suffer a tear and never required surgery.

How Does Love Rank Among Starting QBs?

As we await word on a contract extension for Jordan Love, the debate over what he is currently worth has intensified. When the 2023 season ended, the speculation was Love’s new deal would be in the $45 million per year range. That quickly escalated to the $50 million range. Now that the Lions have signed Jared Goff to a monster deal worth $53 million per year, and reports are circulating that Dak Prescott is asking for $60 million, the asking price by Love might well be rising again.

The issues in the debate over what Green Bay’s young signal caller is worth are familiar to you by now. In summary, he showed the capability of being among the elite quarterbacks in the NFL, but the sample size is very small, encompassing really about ten games. One way we might assess his value is to compare him to the other starting QBs around the league, and determine how many of them you would take over Love. To do this realistically, you must take off your cheesehead, remove your green and gold sunglasses, and slip out of your Packers jersey for just a moment. Try to read the assessments from Ken Lass as objectively as you can.

Succession: The Packers Have Mastered It At QB

Not enough teams take multiple swings in the draft at quarterback, the most important position in all of sports. Invest, invest, invest. Of course, this is much easier said than done in the quest to find a franchise quarterback. And yet, the Packers have mastered it for three decades.

Get Ready for a Van Ness Sophomore Surge

Playing about 33% of the defensive snaps in 2023, Lukas Van Ness turned in four sacks, and 10 QB hits, alongside 32 combined tackles with eight of those being for a loss. Those stats aren't going to make headlines, but when you consider if he saw the same snap count as the Packers' premiere pass rusher, Rashan Gary, he may have bypassed Gary in total tackles and sacks, it puts things into perspective a bit.

Fans can expect Van Ness to see the field a lot more in his second season. Whether that be as an edge rusher or interior lineman will remain to be seen. But no matter what, Lukas Van Ness can be an absolute game-changer on defense.

Key Question for the 2024 Packers: How Quickly Does the Team Pick Up Jeff Hafley’s Defense?

The Green Bay Packers have Super Bowl aspirations in 2024. The team has a young quarterback who looked elite in the second half of last season and a team with talent on both sides of the ball. Like any NFL team in the salary cap era, the Packers have questions and one of the biggest is how quickly the team will get comfortable in Jeff Hafley’s defense.
