Packers dominate Cardinals at Lambeau

Green Bay plays complete game against Arizona

For the first time since Green Bay’s 48-32 romp over Dallas in last year’s playoffs, Matt LaFleur’s team played a complete game, easily dispatching Arizona with strong performances in all three phases. Understandably, it has taken the Packers a while to settle into the season, and while they sat in a healthy position at 3-2 before Sunday’s game, there had not yet been a game which they controlled for 60 minutes, until yesterday. Jordan Love and the offense found the rhythm it had been looking for, moving the ball up and down the field consistently, utilizing both the run and pass game effectively, and cashing in with points. The defense once again contributed with turnovers and special teams even had its say, with Keisean Nixon’s 39-yard punt return setting up a one-play touchdown drive as Love zipped a deep ball to Christian Watson. Penalties were also down to a season-low five. Just like last season, the Packers are the youngest team in the league and had some struggles with consistency early, but this time around, they are hitting stride much earlier and showing why they are Super Bowl contenders.

Packers 34, Cardinals 13: Game Balls / Lame Calls

There are days when you take the game from your opponent, and others when they hand it to you. Sunday was some of both at Lambeau, as the Packers enjoyed their most complete win of the season, 34-13 over the Arizona Cardinals. It’s hard to beat any NFL team when you commit 13 penalties for 100 yards, which the Cards did. Arizona’s self-inflicted miscues slowed or stifled their own drives, while gifting extensions to Green Bay’s, enabling the Packers to jump out to a big early lead from which they never looked back.

The Lass Word: Packers 34 Cardinals 13

This was unfamiliar territory for me, and I wasn’t quite sure how to handle it.  The Green Bay Packers took a lead into the fourth quarter, and I didn’t have to take a blood pressure pill, and grasp the arms of my recliner with a death grip to sweat out whether the defense could hold on.

This time it was the other guys who capitulated late, allowing me to calmly sip my victory Diet Coke, while enjoying watching the green and gold smoothly run the final 5:37 off the clock.  This was the closest thing to a complete game the Packers have put in this season.  Not only solid in all three phases, but consistently solid for four quarters.

There were glitches for sure.  Was there any doubt, after Green Bay romped to a 24-0 lead, that the Packers would somehow find a way to put the opponent back in the game?  Penalties and an interception allowed Arizona to reel off ten quick points before the half, and you can be forgiven if you began to squirm a bit.  Especially when the Cards put three more up at the start of the third quarter.  But there would be no suspense at Lambeau on this day.  The defense choked out any hope of a comeback by forcing three fumbles, and the offense played keep away to seal the fourth win of the season and the second straight.

There will be skeptics who will point out the feat was accomplished against a depleted team that lost a parade of players to in-game injuries, including their star rookie receiver Marvin Harrison Junior, and also did much to orchestrate their own demise with thirteen penalties.  But this was still an opponent that beat the likes of the San Francisco 49ers at their place last week.  It was, by any measure, impressive and encouraging…
