Packers face stiff test against the Texans

Young teams with Super Bowl aspirations

After spotty weather and cooler temps this past Sunday, the gorgeous fall weather will seemingly return with a high estimated around 73 and sunny this Sunday at Lambeau. Honestly, we wouldn't mind a little fall weather for the indoor (well, sorta indoor) Texans team, but getting them outside ain't bad either This is a fantastic measuring stick game for both teams. Houston, coming in at 5-1, has wins over Indy, Chicago, Jacksonville, Buffalo and New England. Save for the Bills, not exactly a murderer's row of opponents. But what this game is, is two young, up-and-coming teams with Super Bowl aspirations. And we think they're both looking to use this game as a springboard for the middle part of the season. And much like the 2012 matchup, let's see if this week can do the same for the 2024 Packers and set up a mid-season run.

The Packers Quietly Have One of the Best O-Lines in the League

When offensive skill position players benefit from great protection and clear running lanes during a game, you often will hear the comment they need to buy dinner for the offensive line that night or later that week. For the Green Bay Packers this season, we hope the Quarterback and Running Backs have kept their offensive line teammates well-fed as they surely deserve it. When you look at the rest of the league and think about the top offensive lines, you see a lot of highly compensated players or high draft picks. But the Packers are mostly filled with mid-round picks still on their rookie contracts. And yet, they're still a top 5 O-line in the league. It also doesn't just end with their starting five.

Evan Williams Is A Star

The Green Bay Packers have been finding fourth-round gems in recent drafts. In 2022, they drafted Romeo Doubs, who led the team in targets and tied with Jayden Reed for most receiving touchdowns in 2023. That same year, they picked Zach Tom, one of the top right tackles in 2024.

The Packers traded up to select Evan Williams in the fourth round of the 2024 draft, and it has proven to be well worth it so far. He is currently the highest-graded safety in the NFL and the top-graded rookie according to Pro Football Focus through six games.

Evan Williams has been a force against both the pass and the run, and if he maintains this consistency throughout the year, he will be a lock for the All-Rookie Team. He just keeps giving Green Bay Packers fans every reason to believe the franchise has struck gold in the fourth-round once again.

Packers sign kicker Brandon McManus

The Packers have released rookie kicker Brayden Narveson and signed veteran Brandon McManus

This past offseason, McManus signed a one-year deal with the Commanders but was released by the team when he was sued over sexual assault allegations by flight attendants due to a 2023 incident while the kicker was a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars. The league reportedly interviewed 30 people (none of them the accusers) in their investigation of the allegations and two weeks ago decided cleared McManus of any potential league discipline.

Speaking with reporters on Wednesday, McManus indicated the lawsuit has been “resolved” and that he is is looking forward to a new opportunity in the NFL.

Watson Opens Up Packers Deep Passing Game

It was a play that showcased the full potential of the 2024 Green Bay Packers’ offense. With the score 17-0 in the 2nd quarter, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur called the perfect play for the situation. After Keisan Nixon’s season-long 39-yard punt return, it was time to attack the end zone. The result was one of the nicest touchdown catches of Christian Watson’s young career; a 44-yard pitch and catch on a rainbow pass from Jordan Love out of play action.

It was no surprise that having Watson and Love play an entire game together for the first time since the opener against the Eagles led to the Packers offense having its best performance of the season. Defenses had to account for the threat of Watson which helped open things up for others. Jayden Reed was his usual self, leading the team in receptions and scoring the team’s first touchdown for the third time in six games. Romeo Doubs returned to the lineup with three catches and two impressive touchdown catches on the sideline.
