5 Takeaways From Preseason Finale: Ty'ron Hopper finishes off a strong summer
Green Bay closed out the preseason the right way, with their cleanest performance yet and ultimately a 20-7 win over Seattle at Lambeau Field.
Ty’ron Hopper was the forgotten man coming into training camp after an anonymous first season in which he essentially redshirted, but this summer the promise that convinced the Packers to take him in the third round in the 2024 NFL draft has been evident.
He has been active and a real presence in every one of Green Bay’s exhibition games and has arguably been their best player throughout the preseason. He capped off a strong summer with a sack and a forced fumble.
The linebacker will still face a challenge to get on the field ahead of Isaiah McDuffie in three linebacker looks, at least early in the season, but the Packers have to feel optimistic about the direction Hopper looks to be going.

Packers trade for OL Darian Kinnard
Earlier this week, the Packers sent a 2027 sixth round pick to the Eagles for offensive lineman Darian Kinnard.
Kinnard is a former fifth round selection of the Kansas City Chiefs back in 2022. After two years with the Chiefs, which featured stints both on the roster and on the practice squad, Kinnard signed a futures deal with the Eagles after the 2023 season.
The Packers take on his $1.03 million salary for the 2025 season.
He holds the rare distinction of being a three time Super Bowl champion, winning two rings with the Chiefs prior to winning one with the Eagles this past year. Kinnard is considered to be a versatile offensive lineman but is listed as a tackle. He appeared in two games with one start for the Eagles last season. The 6' 5" 222lb 25 year old played collegiately at Kentucky where he earned consensus First-Team All-American status as a senior.

Stacked in Green and Gold

Despite his undrafted status, Nazir Stackhouse arrived in Green Bay as almost an immediate candidate to replace the recently departed TJ Slaton as a big-body run defender. DC Jeff Hafley described Stackhouse as a powerful, stout defender in the middle. He can play shade, play on the guard, above the center, and he can hold up on double teams. Packer fans are no strangers to big defensive tackles clogging up the middle. Memories of players like Gilbert Brown and BJ Raji come to mind whenever you think of that, and perhaps Stackhouse being assigned the number 93, the same as the old Gravedigger, could be a good omen for him in building success with Green Bay.
Throughout training camp, Stackhouse showed flashes of that run-stuffing defensive tackle he was advertised as. He had quite a few running plays where you would see him blow up or clog the middle on run plays, holding his own against the offensive line. Many may stare down his stat line in preseason action, only seeing four tackles, three QB hurries, and a batted pass. But it was worth noting that Stackhouse was owning the line of scrimmage at times, and for a player who's just getting used to the way the pros do it, once the game slows down for him, he could become a force for the Packers' defense.
The Packers definitely agree on his potential, keeping him on their initial 53-man roster and not exposing him to waivers right away to start the season.
The Vaunted Third Year
The third year. This is the year for Jordan Love.
Josh Allen (4,544 passing yards, 37 touchdowns and 10 picks), Jalen Hurts (3,701, 22 and 6) and Joe Burrow (4,475, 35 and 12) all skyrocketed their status with huge third years. “If he has that special ability to perform at the highest level during the most difficult times, you will see that emerge in Year 3,” said former NFL executive Bill Polian in 2023. “At the conclusion of year three — and only then — will you know with a firm degree of certainty that you have the person who can lead you to championships.”
We all saw surprising things in Love’s first season as a starter in 2023. He passed for 4,159 yards, with 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Last year, he battled injuries but still passed for 3,389 yards. There are still plenty of people that are unsure about what Love brings. They want to see more, especially in big spots. He’s 1-2 in the playoffs thanks to five touchdowns and five interceptions. Love has shown plenty of poise, especially after taking over for Aaron Rodgers.
In Rodgers’ third season as a starter, he brought back the title to Titletown as the Packers beat Pittsburgh 31-25 in Super Bowl XLV. Ironically enough, Rodgers wasn’t a Pro Bowler that season, but a year before he was, by throwing 30 touchdowns and only seven interceptions — and that team lost in the first round of the playoffs.
It’s the same way with Love. He doesn’t have to shoulder the load by himself to be a success. He just needs to realize that this team has many ways to win. That could be Josh Jacobs, Tucker Kraft, Luke Musgrave or the fleet of wide receivers. There’s also the added layer of Love’s feet, which he barely utilized last year because of the sprained MCL he suffered in his left knee in the season opener.
Last July, Love signed a four, $220 million extension, but this is when a quarterback is supposed to show real growth and consistency. If Love’s season resembles Trevor Lawrence’s (4,016 passing yards, 21 touchdowns and 14 interceptions) third year, there will be more questions than answers. If people aren’t sure right now, they will be roaring questions after the season.
This is the season where the 26-year-old needs to take the next step.
