Packers show resolve in win over Texans

Defense Makes A Statement

Lambeau Leaps were alive and well on a gorgeous autumn day in Green Bay as newly signed kicker Brandon McManus gave the cheesehead faithful something to celebrate. QB Jordan Love shook off a pair of first half interceptions with a brilliant two minute drive in the fourth quarter finishing the game throwing 24/33 220 YDS 3 TD and 2 INT with a QBR of 95.5. WR Romeo Doubs had 8 REC for 94 YDS and S Evan Williams led the team with 9 total tackles continuing his stand out rookie campaign. I

5 Takeaways From Texans 22 - 24 Packers: Love Channels His Inner Favre

For better and for worse, Jordan Love is a gunslinger. The comparisons to Brett Favre have grown and become more apt ever since the current Packers QB donned a Favre jersey before their week four matchup with the Vikings, a game which he ended with four touchdowns and three interceptions. His performance versus the Texans was also Favre-like, as Love fired three touchdown passes but also two picks.

Matt LaFleur encouraged the media to ease up on the Favre comparisons after Sunday’s game, but it is not supposed to be an insult. Favre was an incredible player, who also took a lot of risks. Love is built the same way. He now leads the NFL in interceptions (8) despite only playing four games, but is also tied for first in touchdown passes with 15.

Love’s first pick on Sunday was arguably just a smart play by the Texans defense, but his second was a head-scratcher, a needless throw into traffic on first down. But without that willingness to rip the ball into tight windows, Love would not have pulled off his first touchdown pass of the day, a bullet to Tucker Kraft over the middle of the field. It was far from a perfect performance from Love, but he showed real growth in calmly leading the Packers down the field for a field goal which won the game. Two-minute drills are something he has struggled with in the past, often forcing throws before it is necessary. While the interceptions can be frustrating, they do not make him a bad player. Love is a great quarterback, he is just more Favre than Rodgers.

Packers 24, Texans 22: Game Balls/Lame Calls

Enjoy roller coasters? This game was for you.

In what would otherwise be considered a dominant performance against the Houston Texans, the Packers eked out a last-second 24-22 win after several attempts to let the game slip away.

Green Bay was on the wrong side of the turnover battle for only the second time this year, and suffered their first shutout on takeaways. Yet this was the best game of the season for Jeff Hafley’s defense, with relentless blitz and pressure packages that flummoxed quarterback C.J. Stroud and neutered Houston’s passing game.

Another rough first half was rescued by a brilliant third quarter. The Packers’ special teams made critical mistakes, yet in the end their newly signed, experienced kicker came through in the clutch. It was a yin and yang kind of day.

The Lass Word: Making A Statement

It is one thing for the Green Bay Packers to finally prove they can beat one of the top teams in the league.  It is another to prove they can beat one of the top teams in the league while making enough mistakes and bad decisions to lose several games.

It’s hard to overstate the value of Sunday’s 24-22 victory.  A loss would have sent the Packers into the abyss of the middle of the NFC pack.  The win keeps them just a floor below the conference penthouse.  It was helpful that the Lions put a loss on the Vikings.  Green Bay now has the third best record in the NFC, and is back in the division chase, just one game back.

They somehow got this done despite trailing in the turnover battle 0-3.  They did everything a team does to lose a close game.  Untimely penalties, bad quarterback decisions, dropped passes, disastrous special teams plays.  But thanks to a gritty defense that never stopped fighting, a $55 million per year quarterback who finally played up to his salary on the final drive, and a kicker who hadn’t made a field goal in 277 days, the Packers made their winter warning whiteout a day of celebration.  There’s so much to unpack from this battle royal.  Let’s give it a try…
