Packers training camp heats up

The Packers Championship Window Is Open

With the contract extension just signed by quarterback Jordan Love, thereby stabilizing the most important position, the Green Bay Packers have just opened a true championship window.

For roughly the next four years, this Packers team figures to have the talent, the finances, the coaching staff, the front office, and certainly the fan support to win its first title since 2010. It’s not just having a bunch of good players. It’s having a bunch of good players who are entering the prime of their careers at the same time, and yet remaining affordable enough to hold together for at least a few seasons. It’s having a coaching staff that has demonstrated the ability to develop young talent and have them ready for the biggest of stages. It’s having a front office that has a knack for spotting talent off the street and in the draft, and acquiring that talent while maintaining enough cap space to fill in any gaps. Right now this organization checks all those boxes.

Love Returns in Time to Turn Up Practice Competition

With the Packers defense dominating early training camp practices, Love's return has turned up the heat in the offense's favor.

The first four practices of training camp, with all due respect to Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt, did not seem to be very competitive. Clifford threw seven total interceptions in just two practices to start the week. The defense was not only feasting on interceptions in practice until Love’s arrival on the field last Saturday, but they were also enjoying racking up the sacks. Now, it seems, the tone is a bit different. Jordan Love is a little more capable of rolling out and escaping a collapsed pocket and locating his targets. So, the defense now has to work a bit harder if they want to be celebrating as often as they were at the start of camp.

Romeo Doubs Pulling Away From Rest of WRs

One of the early highlights of training camp has been the one-on-one battles between Jaire Alexander and Romeo Doubs. On Tuesday, Doubs and Jaire faced each other three times in 1x1's with Doubs getting the best of all of them. Alexander begged for one more rep, but he didn't get it.

It's not just Jaire Alexander that Romeo Doubs has been besting either. On Tuesday alone he gained a step on Carrington Valentine for a big catch where you could say Valentine got "Moss'd" with Doubs making the catch just over his head. And then in a red zone attempt, Eric Stokes had very good coverage on Doubs, but Love just put it only where Doubs could touch it and he reeled it in getting both feet in bounds for the touchdown on third down.

"I always want to go against Doubs, the dude's freaking really good” said Alexander after practice. He continued to praise Doubs stating that the third year receiver couldn't catch a thing on him when he was a rookie but now they're going up for 50/50 balls and Doubs is holding his own. Alexander also stated that on his list of top receivers in the league, he believes Doubs to be a close second to former Packer, Davante Adams. That's some mighty high praise coming from one of the best corners in the league. Adams himself is a great route runner and if Alexander sees the same in Doubs, we could be in for a big year three from number 87.

Rasheed Walker Continues To Impress

Rasheed Walker was supposed to be a stopgap at left tackle. He was drafted in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft as a Band-Aid to fill the left tackle position. David Bakhtiari was the mainstay for a long time in Green Bay. Now it’s Walker’s time. It was supposed to be Yosh Nijman’s until Walker outplayed him to win the job.

Walker was ranked as the No. 28 best pass blocker among all tackles last year according to Pro Football Focus. That’s one spot ahead of Tom. He also only allowed 24 hurries last year. The Packers offensive line was ranked as the No. 11 unit in the NFL at the end of 2023. Expect Walker and the line to come in much higher in 2024.

LaFleur breaks down Love Interception

CHTV co-founder Aaron Nagler asked Packers head coach Matt LaFleur about Kalen King’s interception of Jordan Love during a recent training camp practice and got an incredibly detailed answer. Must-see stuff for football nerds.

Offensive Line Starts to Take Shape

A little over a week into training camp, we are starting to get some answers about the team’s offensive line. Unfortunately, injuries have prevented the desired starting five linemen from getting reps together. Head coach Matt LaFleur has always said he wants the best five linemen on the field as starters.

The Packers have multiple players on their roster who can play multiple positions which can help keep the best five players in the lineup. Thus far, the Packers starters, when everybody is healthy, have been Rasheed Walker at left tackle, Elgton Jenkins at left guard, Josh Myers at center, and Zach Tom at right tackle. The right guard spot has been a rotation between third-year man Sean Rhyan and rookie, first-round pick, Jordan Morgan. The Packers initially said they would look at Morgan at tackle, but he's seen more time at guard in the early days of camp.
