Packers set to sweep the AFC South

In the Brett Favre-Aaron Rodgers-Jordan Love era, one of the biggest rarities for the Green Bay Packers has been sweeping an entire AFC division in inter-conference matchups. On Sunday, the Packers have a chance to do that with a win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. So far this season, Green Bay has three wins in its three AFC games: defeating Indianapolis 16-10, defeating Tennessee 30-14, and defeating Houston 24-22.

For the Packers to build on their three-game winning streak and keep that momentum going toward a 12 or 13-win season, they can not have a letdown against a Jaguars team that is 5-10 in their last 15 games dating back to last November; which includes a 1-9 span from last to December thru their Week 4 loss to Houston.

Xavier McKinney is the Reason Hafley's Defense Works

The Packers have made several attempts to fill the game-changing safety void since losing Nick Collins to a 2011 neck injury in . Ha Ha Clinton-Dix was drafted 21st overall in 2014. He had some flashes but never quite lived up to the hype many had behind him when his name was called by the commissioner on draft night. After Clinton-Dix was traded away in 2018 the Packers signed safety Adrian Amos and drafted safety Darnell Savage the following offseason. Amos was a solid safety, but he wasn't exactly the game-changer LeRoy Butler or Collins were. Savage on the other hand was almost a repeat of Clinton-Dix, had some flashes, but never lived up to the hype. The Packers let Adrian Amos hit free agency in 2023 and the same with Darnell Savage in 2024.

So, with a Safety position to essentially rebuild in 2024, enter Xavier McKinney.

Packers Vs. Texans - 3 Plays That Make You Go Hmmm

After re-watching the Packers game, Jersey Al always finds three plays that made him go hmmm, for various reasons. In general, he tries to focus on a theme, the less obvious, or things here didn't notice watching live.

Evan Williams was selected in the fourth round by the Packers after they traded up with the Jets for pick #111 in exchange for picks #126 and #190. Al went back and looked over various scouting reports and they all pretty much had Williams as a backup strong safety at best. Well, Williams has already proven the scouts wrong as he has claimed a starting job and has formed a very good tandem with Xavier McKinney. Watching Williams on tape, he and McKinney communicate so well and are totally in sync as to their responsibilities on every play. This plays to the football intelligence and instincts described as Williams' strong points in those scouting reports. Where he has surprised and exceeded all expectations as a rookie has been against the run.

Every report mentioned missed tackles as a problem. Watching NFL games live, you'll see a safety making a tackle, but don't always see what he did to get to that point. So Al has highlighted three plays that show the traits that have made Williams so successful in such a short time.

Packers Playbook: Packers 24 Texans 22

Dusty Evely from ACME Packing Company and Packers legend John Kuhn break down four offensive plays from Green Bay's win over the Texans.

Zach Tom Is An All-Pro Caliber Tackle

Zach Tom has arguably been Green Bay's best offensive lineman for a while now. Since joining the Packers, he has allowed a sack once every 312 pass-blocking snaps and a quarterback hit once every 156 snaps. Last year, Tom earned a strong 81.2 run-blocking grade from Pro Football Focus. In 2024, he's improved even further, with his grade rising to 86.5. No other Packers lineman is above 60.0. PFF also credits Tom as the best run-blocker in football on zone-run schemes. He is one of just four offensive tackles with at least an 80.0 grade in both pass-blocking and run-blocking. He's also a top-10 tackle in pass-blocking grade on true pass sets among those with at least 100 snaps.

Additionally, he's tied for the fourth-fewest pressures allowed among tackles with at least 150 pass-blocking snaps. Through seven games, Zach Tom has recorded four games with no pressures, hurries, quarterback hits, or sacks, achieving perfect pass-blocking efficiency. He’s also been one of the top five highest-graded Packers in five of those seven games.
