Who Earns The Last Few Roster Spots?

It’s crunch time for Packers on the roster bubble

With two preseason games in the books and only one remaining, it’s crunch time for the Packers on the roster bubble to make one last push. In addition to the final preseason game, the Packers have one public practice remaining, a joint practice with the Seattle Seahawks. There are a number of players in heated positional battles for one of the final spots on the roster. For many, the number of opportunities remaining is dwindling to show the Packers front office why they deserve to be on the team.

There are only five days before the Packers have to cut the active roster from 90 to 53 players. Some are competing to make the roster for the first time; others are veterans trying to hold off younger players. Some players are trending in the right direction, while others have put themselves in a tough spot. It’s hard to predict exactly what Brian Gutekunst and the Packers front office might do, but either way, it’s time for all of these players to make one last push for a spot on the roster.

Deslin Alexandre making a move?

This past Saturday, #49 kept flashing on the screen charging through the offensive line and pressuring quarterbacks, even recording a sack - although the Indy line blew a stunt pickup and he went in untouched.

Still, he was all over the field, chasing the ball when he wasn't rushing the passer and showing up on special teams as well. His name? Deslin Alexandre.

The Packers signed the 6'3" 264lbs edge rusher to a futures contract this January after he spent some time with the Jets and Bears last year. In five seasons at Pitt, Alexandre appeared in 58 games, recording 131 tackles (56 solo), 29.5 tackles for a loss, 16.5 sacks, eight passes defensed and two fumble recoveries. Normally you’d think he has traits worth developing. However, he's already 27 years old as a first year player. Still, perhaps a practice squad spot will be his.

Lukas Van Ness Seems Ready for a Breakout Season

When the Green Bay Packers selected Lukas Van Ness with the 13th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, they knew he would need some time before earning a full-time role on defense. The Iowa alum had outstanding athletic traits but needed to improve his technique and to develop more moves to compete at the highest level. After two relatively quiet seasons in a part-time role, Van Ness appears to be ready to take a big step forward in 2025, his third season in the NFL.

The man they call “Hercules” recorded four sacks in his rookie season while playing just 33 percent of the team’s defensive snaps. In 2024, Van Ness played 39 percent of the defensive snaps but added just three sacks. A broken thumb limited his ability to use one hand for the first 11 games of the season. Still, the season was a bit of a disappointment for Van Ness despite the fact that he improved against the run.

Van Ness has had a strong training camp thus far with the Packers. He has been with the first-string defense since day one. That is a big accomplishment considering Van Ness hasn’t started a competitive football game since high school. Throughout training camp, Van Ness has been making plays and getting himself into the backfield to pressure quarterbacks and disrupt running plays.

If he can put it all together, the Packers could have a formidable starting duo with Van Ness and Rashan Gary and a solid rotation with Brenton Cox, Kingsley Enagbare, and rookie Barryn Sorrell. But getting a breakout season from Van Ness would be key to achieving that goal. It’s still early, but “Hercules” seems ready for a coming out party in 2025.

Patience Is Needed With MarShawn Lloyd

Shortly after the 2024 NFL Draft, Packer fans heard NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah say they had gotten the best running back in the draft. Former Senior Bowl director and respected NFL scout, Jim Nagy agreed with him on that statement. This was high praise considering three running backs were selected before Lloyd in the draft with the first going 42 picks ahead of him. He'd have his work cut out for him proving this was indeed true.

Unfortunately, for Marshawn Lloyd and the Packers, injuries plagued his rookie season.

Seemingly the moment he put on the Green and Gold, he suffered a hip injury, which forced him to miss the early portions of the 2024 training camp. Then he suffered a hamstring sprain in the preseason opener. In Week 2, he suffered a grade 2 ankle sprain, which led to him being placed on injured reserve. In November, he was diagnosed with appendicitis and had to undergo an emergency appendectomy. He was moved to the non-football injury/illness list and didn’t play again in 2024.

This past offseason, the Packers sent Lloyd to UW-Madison to get evaluated at the Badger Athletic Performance facility, which was where Christian Watson went to get evaluated for his oft-injured hamstrings. Things were going good in camp until he missed the preseason opener with a groin injury and then he suffered a hamstring injury at Indianapolis this past Saturday. The cryptic quote from Packers coach Matt LaFleur didn’t say much but it said a lot. “He’s going to miss some time.”

The knee jerk response would be to call for the Packers should give up on Lloyd. That’s the wrong answer for a guy that is only 24. He is under contract until 2027 with cap hits of $1.2 million in 2025, $1.5 million in 2026 and $1.8 million in 2027. That’s peanuts in today’s NFL. Lloyd also has the attitude that he wants to prove everyone wrong that already has him labeled as an injury risk. He can succeed in this league, it will just take patience — from both sides.
