Traits of a Successful 2025 Season for the Packers

Over the past two decades, the Green Bay Packers have remained one of the more competitive teams in the NFL year after year. However, over the past three decades, their sustained success has only translated into two Super Bowl victories.

Of course, that is still more than most teams can boast, and the Packers are one of 12 teams to win multiple Super Bowls in the past 30 years. In fact, Green Bay has been a model example of stability and a level of consistency that is difficult to sustain in the NFL. Unfortunately, that has been marred by many disappointing and underwhelming finishes to promising seasons.

Most recently, the Packers saw a Super Bowl window close without adding to the trophy room as they navigated the final seasons with Aaron Rodgers and the preliminary seasons under Matt LaFleur. Turn ahead the clock to the first two seasons with Jordan Love under center, and the Packers have realized a new Super Bowl window cracked open, hardly skipping a beat transitioning off of a future Hall of Fame quarterback. Coming off being the youngest team in the NFL for the second consecutive year, the Packers created high expectations after an overachieving 2023. But similar to seasons past, the success translated into another underwhelming follow-up season to disrupt a promising ascent.

As the Packers turn their attention to the 2025 season, where they hope to put back into gear their climb toward a Super Bowl, the expectation for improvement has been voiced far and wide, even from the front office. Many remain split on the direction of the franchise or the required adjustments to get on track, but one thing is abundantly clear to everyone: the Packers need to take a significant step forward in 2025.

Top 5 WR Prospects for the Packers

CHTV contributor Cody Roadcap highlights the Top 5 WR prospects for the Green Bay Packers in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Pushing Back on the Tush Push

Earlier this week, NFL owners considered various potential rule changes at the annual league meetings. While a few rules were adjusted, the Packers proposal to ban the Tush Push was tabled until the owners meet later in the offseason.

The biggest argument in favor of a ban is player safety. Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott, who is a member of the league's competition committee and a lead figure in banning the play, argued on Monday that with the positions and postures of players being used to execute that type of play, adding in the additional force can lead to serious injury. There isn't much medical evidence to support that theory, but McDermott would rather be proactive before there are examples. Chiefs coach, Andy Reid leaned a bit in favor of a ban stating that if the play puts any player in a bad position, then you probably have to do something about it. To this day, however, there are no known injuries reported as a result of this play.

Another argument is that the play creates an uneven playing field. If the play sticks, it allows offensive players to push teammates forward, however, the defense cannot do this. On field goal plays, the defense cannot use other players for leverage in blocking a kick without being penalized. So, why should the offense be allowed to use other players for leverage, but the defense cannot? Despite some of the public perception, these arguments do have some validity, but you don't want to punish a team for executing a play better than others.

Should the Packers Trade Back in the 2025 NFL Draft?

Green Bay Packers GM Brian Gutekunst remains unpredictable in the first round of the NFL Draft. He has traded up to try to grab players he really wanted, and he has traded back to get more picks. Once he even did both in the first round of the same draft back in 2018. He has also held on to the pick and made his selection. But what should the Packers do in this draft?

If teams want an elite pass rusher, they generally need to find that player in the first round. But if there are no elite receivers, pass rushers, or cornerbacks available at 23, would it make more sense to trade back and get additional picks in day two or even a high pick in next year’s draft?

First Round Wide Receiver for the Packers? Don’t Count on It

Even after signing Mecole Hardman, the Packers still need a wide receiver. The popular argument is that the Green Bay receiving corps needs a “true” No. 1. Heck, even running back Josh Jacobs said so a few weeks back. Specifically, he praised the receivers already in Green Bay, then added, “but I think personally we need a guy that's proven to be a No. 1 already, somebody that we know is going to be a little bit more consistent.”

Free agency didn’t produce anything close to that, leading most of us to believe General Manager Brian Gutekunst will take at least one wide receiver in the upcoming draft which, in case you’ve been in a coma, is happening in Green Bay April 24-26.

Packers beat writer Matt Schneidman over at The Athletic recently made the bold prediction that Gutekunst will select a wide receiver in the first round of this year’s draft – and it would be the first time since 2002 and the Javon Walker pick since the Packers went receiver on Day 1. And he may just hit on his prognostication. As we’ve said before, the only thing we can count on from a Gutey draft or free-agency period is that it’s hard to count on anything.

Schneidman has wondered aloud if the Packers might trade for Tetairoa McMillan, the 6-5, 212 pounder from Arizona, as a deep threat in the mold of the oft-injured Christian Watson. Going off the unpredictability argument, Gutey may actually trade up to get him. Meanwhile, others have linked Green Bay Iowa State’s Matthew Golden and even Utah State’s Jalen Royals as an early pick.

That said, a trade-up or a first-round wideout is highly unlikely to happen. First-round wide receivers too often provide a low ROI. If, in fact, the Packers come away with a wide receiver in the 2025 draft it will most likely be on Day 2 and/or Day 3. It’s just hard to believe Gutekunst will sacrifice draft capital to trade up for a wide receiver in Round 1. Agree or disagree with this methodology, it’s still the Packer Way.

Guess we’ll find out in about a month.
